Club championships , finals day - the finals day took place on Sunday 31st August with six competitions reaching their conclusions. First to be decided was the Mixed doubles which was played in the morning with Judy Atkin and Matt Wood playing Elaine Jones and Andrew McLeod, Judy and Matt won a close match 7-5, 7-5. In the afternoon the mens and ladies singles were played in parallel. The mens singles saw a repeat of last year's final and the same result as Richard Waters retained the title beating Stuart jones 6-4, 6-3; meanwhile in the ladies final Sandra Hume came from a break down on the first set to beat Alison clarke 7-5, 6-4. In the mens singles plate Simon Greengrass defended last years win and ran out a comfortable winner against David Scarlett. Then it was time for more doubles starting with the ladies and in a match interrupted by rain Elaine Jones made up for her disappointment in the morning by partnering Agnes Kittles to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sarah Goldsmith and Alison clarke, finally in the mens doubles Stuart Jones made it a family double as he partnered Matt Wood to beat Bob Waters and Cyril Potter 6-1, 6-0.

Chairman's Cup (over 40's) and Under 40's Cup- we played these competitions yesterday and unfortunately on 6 played in the Chairman's Cup and 2 in the under 40's . The chairman's cup was played in a round robin format playing short sets so that everyone played with everyone else and against everyone else at least twice with different combinations of opponents each time. Andrew Goldsmith won the event and Cyril Potter was runner up. With just 2 participants in the Under 40's Cup, brothers Tom & Josh Wiffen played a full 3 set match to decide the winner and Tom overcame his brother to win the cup. (click here for photo)

15th July 2008

Maurice Rowson Jubilee Bowl- this competition was played on Friday 20th June and had a good entry of 16 players playing in a whist drive format, results were close all evening and it wasn't until the final game that the winner was decided - Richard Waters won narrowly with Seb Goldsmith finishing runner up. The chairman and his wife to be laid on a barbeque as well to make the evening a thoroughly enjoyable occasion

Friendly match v Stebbing- we played a friendly match against Stebbing on 16th June and had a very enjoyable evening, the sets were close and going into the last 2 sets Stebbing led 4-3 and they managed to win the both sets to win the match 6-3. A return has been arranged for 24th September

Gosfield Village Fete- we had a stall at the fete on Saturday 12th July which raised the profile of the club a bit within the village as well as enabling us to make a contribution to the village funds, Generally the rain held off and the stall was well received by the visitors. The short tennis proved popular with the younger attendees - click here to see a picture of the stall

Murder Mystery Evening! - last night the Maurice Rowson Hall became the famous 2 star Primrose Glade Hotel at the resort of Gosfield on Sea, for the murder mystery evening, the stage was transformed in to a hotel reception area and the hall laid out by some of the committee with the tables as hotel suites all named after flowers and a reception desk where the visitors confirmed their reservations. Meanwhile other committee members and partners - led by Sheila Sutton, prepared the buffet in the kitchen area. Over 70 of the 96 available tickets were sold so that the Coggeshall drama group - who acted out the play for us, had a good sized audience to play to. The play was well performed and quite humourous to add to the fun with some excellent additional pieces to entertain the audience. Several of the suites worked out the culprits correctly so the winners were decided by their reasons for making their choice, the winners - judged by the drama group , were the Bluebell suite who were delighted to collect their prizes from the stage. A separate prize for the best comedy solution went to the Hyacinth suite - including members Stuart and Elaine Jones and Stuart duly collected their boxes of chocolates as prizes. The raffle was well supported both by the number of tickets sold and by the committee members who donated raffle prizes (16 prizes in all so most tables got at least one).
