20th November 2007 QUIZ EVENING The club is hosting another quiz evening on Saturday 26th January at the Maurice Rowson Hall in Gosfield, full details here - if you wish to enter a team please contact Andrew or Ann, click here for an entry form
8th November 2007 At the AGM last week we discussed when to play clubtennis during the winter months and there was a suggestion that we play on saturday mornings at 10.00am, Agnes Kittles has offered to co-ordinate this so if you are interested in playing then please e-mail Agnes on agneskittles@hotmail.com 16th October 2007 The club has entered a mixed team in the Halstead and District Winter league, a link to the fixture list is available on the calendar page with details of court closure times for the home matches The club annual general meeting will be held at the Maurice Rowson Hall, Gosfield on Thursday 1st november at 8.00 p.m. Following the success of the quiz night in Janaury , this is being repeated again in 2008 , the date is 26th January at the Maurice Rowson Hall, Gosfield 24th September 2007 The final tournament of the season took place on Saturday 15th September with one of the best entries of the year when the Vice President's Cup was contested with the members palying in a whist drive format. The Club's mens' singles champion Richard Waters completed a successful season by winning his fourth tournament of the year whilst Agnes Kittles finished runner up, click here to view a photo of the winners 10th September 2007 The remaining final of this year's club championshipstook place on Saturday when Stuart Jones and Paul Goldsmith played Richard Waters and Tony Wiffen in the final. The latter had a busy week playing their semi final when they beat Bob Waters (Richard’s father) and David Scarlett . Richard had beaten Stuart in the singles final the previous weekend but this time Stuart came out winner with Paul closing out the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.The winners received their salvers following the conclusion of the match and a photo of them with the trophies can be seen by clicking here , further photos of the match are available in the photo section in the photo gallery for the 2007 club championships - link . The last competition of the season takes place this Saturday at 4 p.m. -a whist drive tournament for the Vice President's Cup 4th September 2007 The club held it’s club championships finals on Sunday watched by a good turnout of supporting members. Five trophies were contested firstly the mens singles saw Stuart Jones - the winner for the last three years play Richard Waters and it was the latter who won 6-2, 6-2 ending Stuart’s run. In the ladies’ singles Sandra Hume beat Judy Atkin 6-1, 6-4 in the first of three finals in which she played on the day. Having won the singles Sandra then partnered Agnes Kittles to victory in the Ladies Doubles winning 6-1, 6-0 against Sue Capon and Sarah Goldsmith. Meanwhile on the second court the mens plate final was played between Simon Greengrass and Tony Wiffen with Simon winning 6-2, 6-2. In the last final of the afternoon Sandra Hume made it a hatrick of wins when she and Matt Wood beat Agnes Kittles and Andrew McLeod in the mixed doubles 6-3, 6-2. After the conclusion of the mixed doubles the trophies were presented by club president Peggy McLeod. 25th August 2007 today we played the Passfield Shields tournament - a drawn pairs competition. Unfortunately only 6 people played ( i.e. 3 pairs) and we played in a round robin format with the winners being Richard Waters and Judy Atkin
10th August 2007 The last 2 tournaments were postponed but things got back on track when we played the Chairman's Cup tournament on Friday 3rd August. Turnout was rather poor however we still enjoyed some good tenns. The Chairman's Cup for the best over 40's player was won by Andrew Goldsmith with Sarah Goldsmith finishing runner up and the under 40 competition was won by Seb Goldsmith with Richard Waters runner up. 7th June 2007 The tournament season is now well underway, last sunday we played the singles tournament for the bernard Brooks Cup ( men ) and Molly Pyne Shield ( ladies ). eight men competed in two leagues with the top two from each going into the semi finals. From group 1 Seb Goldsmith went through undefeated as winner with his cousin Paul Goldsmith finishing as runner up. In Group 2 both of last years finalists went through with Richard Waters topping the group ahead of defending holder Chris McLeod. In the semi finals Richard overcame Paul without dropping a game and chris beat Seb 5-3 in the best of 8 sets, so in the end it was a repeat of last year's final and Richard avenged last lear's defeat with a 6-0 victory although the scoreline didnt reflect the closeness of the match , several of the games could have gone either way. Only 3 ladies participated and the top tow, Alison clarke and sue Capon went through to compete the final which Alison won 6-1, after the completion of the matches Peggy McLeod presented the trophies and prizes to the winners:- next Sunday we are playing a handicap tournament to which you may also bring guests, there is an entry sheet on the noticeboard at the club, after that the next tournament is the Vice President's Cup on Friday 22nd June at 6.00 pm. The draws for the club championships were made on Sunday and details are available on the Calendar page or click here to go directly to the draws 21st May 2007 The first evening tournament of the year took place last friday when 12 members competed in a whist drive tournament for the Maurice Rowson Cup. four rounds were played during the evening and the winner was decided on the last round as Richard Waters finsihed just one point ahead of Seb Goldsmith with Jon Goldsmith a further point back. On Sunday we hosted the Try Tennis day with weather much better than the previous Sunday, attendance was not as good as last year but those that did visit enjoyed it and as a result we were able to welcome some new members to the club. The Member and a Guest tournament planned for next Sunday ( 27th ) has been cancelled and will be replaced by a handicap tournament on Sunday 10th June - members may also bring guests to this tournament if they wish, we are trying out the handicap format this Saturday ( 26th ) from 10.00 , all members are welcome to come along and try it. 16th May 2007 The Try Tennis day planned for last Sunday had to be postponed due to bad weather, the event will now take place this sunday ( 20th May ) from 2 to 6 p.m. the event is free to anyone wishing to try tennis or to see the club facilities 23rd April 2007 The club hosted a junior tournament yesterday with 4 pairs representing Gosfield, Braintree, Earls Colne and Hedingham. The tennis was of a very high standard with several very close sets in a round robin format. At the end Gosfield represented by Josh Wiffen and joel McLeod ran out close winners. After a break for lunch the eight boys played a knock out singles competition in which Louis Lee-Allen from Earls Colne beat Joel McLeod in the final. Thanks to all the boys for participating and to Tony wiffen for organising the event 22nd April 2007 The courts will be closed for the next Thursdays ( 26th April, 3rd May and 10th May ) from 6.30 until dark as they are being hired by Braintree Tennis Club on those evenings. The courst will also be closed for home league matches and during club competitions, click here for a list of the league matches 11th April 2007 There are some changes to the 2007 Calendar - The club championship finals have been moved forward to Sunday 2nd September, The junior tournament is now on 22nd April and an extra event - a Member and a Guest tournament will be held on Sunday 27th May - the entry list for this and other early season tournaments are now on display at the club house. We are starting Friday evening tennis this coming Friday , 13th April at 6.00 p.m. - all members welcome, please remember to put your name on the board when you arrive. 24th March 2007 The club's start of season Dinner will be held at The Kings Head, Gosfield on Friday 20th April, please contact Ann if you wish to attend 15th March 2007 The club calendar of events for the year has now been posted on the Calendar page , click here to link to it 28th January 2007 The quiz evening took place last night with over 90 people making up 16 teams to participate.The winners were 'Two hims and two hers' who finished on 98 points out of a possible 148, one ahead of 'Windypops'.The chairman's team 'Allsorts' won the wooden spoon for the lowest score (56). 21st january 2007 The quiz evening is now less than a week away , currently we have 15 teams entered ,we can take a maximum of 18 so if you wish to enter please do so quickly to avoid disappointment. A reminder that the quiz starts at 7.30 at the Maurice Rowson Hall which can be found on the road to the church and Gosfield Lake about 200 yards from the Kings Head P.H. ( turn left at Kings Head if coming from Braintree direction ). see the news item for 16th October for more details and entry form 5th November 2006 The re-surfaced and re-painted courts have seen their first use this weekend, 8 members played this morning in sunny conditions and plan to make sunday morning tennis a regular fixture click here to see a photo of the new court in the two tone green colour scheme and here for another view including the pavilion 2nd November 2006 The court re-surfacing is now complete and the courts have been painted - as long as the weather stays dry they will be available for play this coming weekend 25th October 2006 The club AGM will be held at the Maurice Rowson Hall at 8.00 p.m. on Tuesday 14th November , we hope to see as many mambers as possible there. among those playing , they are £8 per hour per court so if there
are 10 playing it will be £3.20 per person 28th September 2006 Jonathan has spoken to Ann today and the court has now been resurfaced and the other court has had the lines removed prior to painting , therefore there are no courts available to play on at present, it it likely to be two or three weeks before painting is carried out. Jonathan and I are investigating other courts in the area that we may be able to hire ( players to share the cost ) so if you are interested in joining in please drop me an e-mail ( gosfield-tennis@hotmail.co.uk ) or use the link at the bottom of the page. 10th September 2006 Club Championships Finals Day report The club held the finals of it’s club championships on Sunday in fine conditions when four finals were contested. In the men’s final defending champion Stuart Jones played Chris McLeod who beat him in the singles tournament 3 weeks earlier, however Stuart avenged his defeat and retained his title winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile on the second court the mixed doubles final was being played and Agnes Kittles and Jon Goldsmith beat Sarah Goldsmith and Bob Waters by the same score. After a break for afternoon tea, both the men’s and ladies’ doubles finals were played and Stuart Jones completed a winning afternoon partnering Seb Goldsmith as they beat Andrew McLeod and Jon Goldsmith 6-2, 6-3. The fourth final was the Ladies’ doubles in which Agnes Kittles and Sue Capon beat Alison Clarke and Sarah Goldsmith 6-1, 6-0. After the conclusion of the finals the trophies were presented by club president Peggy McLeod Gosfield Tennis
